Administrative History

At the recessional of the formal opening of Edmon Low Library, May 8, 1953, the carillon bells were rang in concert by Arthur Lynds Bigelow, bellmaster at Princeton University and Louvain, Belgium. “The concert featured a wide range of music chosen to demonstrate the versatility of the Schulmerick Flemish and English carillons. The bells were made in Sellersvill, Pennsylvania, and had been installed by the Schulmerick Company’s engineer, Robert Duffield. The Flemish bells contained 61 tonal notes and were equal to 275,372 pounds of cast bells. These instruments were housed in five metal cabinets with one octave in each. Another cabinet contained the English bells of twenty-five notes and two octaves. These bells were equal to 79,462 pounds of cast bells. The Flemish bells were characterized as major tones and the English by their minor tonal qualities. Each day the English bells ring to tell the time; the Flemish bells were used only for concerts. The bells cost $25,000.” (The Campus: Centennial History Series, p. 229-230.)
