Biographical Sketch

Rebecca Towne Nurse (1621-1692) was born in Great Yarmouth, England, to William and Joanna Towne. The family moved to the Massachusetts colony and settled in Salem in 1640. She married Francis Nurse around 1644.

Even though she was a pious, well-respected woman in Salem, Rebecca Nurse was accused of witchcraft and stood trial at the age of 71 in the Salem Witch Trials. Although found innocent at first, the girls who accused her began having fits after her verdict. As a result, the jury asked that their original verdict be overturned. She was found guilty and was hanged on July 19, 1692.
